Sneak Peek – “The Host”

MTV recently visited the set of the film The Host, which is based on Stephenie Meyer’s novel of the same title. The novel tells the story of Melanie (Saoirse Ronan), who refuses to give up control of her mind after a race of “souls” comes to Earth to take over the minds of the human race. The film is being directed by Andrew Niccol (In Time). MTV had a chance to chat with Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons (Jared Howe), and Stephenie Meyer while on set.

Here’s a link to the interview video for my American viewers:

Unfortunately, if you are in Canada or any other international location, you may not be able to watch it. However, still give it a try and good luck!

Are you excited to see The Host on screen? Will you be anxiously awaiting its March 29,2013 release?

Disney Halts Production on “Order of the Seven”

An Order of the Seven, Disney’s new Asia-set adventure movie, has been put on hold.

Saoirse Ronan was set to star and Michael Gracey was to make his directorial debut on the project that has been in development for almost ten years. The project, which began as a Snow White retelling, was looking for an international cast to play a group of warriors tasked with protecting a young woman. Plus, even as late as last week, the studio hired Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man) to fix and refine the script.

However, sources at Disney say that development work is being stopped. Order of the Seven was in preproduction, expected to start filming and hoping to start in London this summer.

Due to the outcome of the high-budget film John Carter struggling at the box office when it released in March this year, Disney has been examining budgets closely on its new and developing movies. The budget for Order of the Seven, which has not been revealed, was big enough to make the studio take a second look. Also having a first-time director (Gracey) signed on for the project added to the nervousness.

Order of the Seven was originally set up by producer Andrew Gunn as a live-action kung fu take on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs but it eventually turned into a fantasy-action adventure tale. The premise was focused on a young woman in 19th century Hong Kong who escapes her wicked stepmother and takes refuge with seven men belonging to an ancient order that fights demons and dragons.

This isn’t the first time Disney has halted production over budget concerns. Disney also halted the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced The Lone Ranger (starring Johnny Depp) last year, only to continue and approve production once the film’s budget was reworked.

It is interesting that yet another Snow White inspired story was going to be made into a film, but not all developing titles make it to the big screen. Do you think Disney made a smart move halting production? Would you be interested in seeing this film if it is made?
