20th Century Fox recently earned the rights for a remake of the popular stage and movie musical, Guys and Dolls. The studio will soon begin production on the remake and actors Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are under consideration for the title roles. Currently, there is no director or screenwriter signed on for the project, but Tatum and Gordon-Levitt are interested in being a part of the film.
For those of you unfamiliar with the musical, it is set in New York in the 1940s and follows a group of professional gamblers and petty criminals through their adventures in the city. Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando were in the original MGM film made in 1955 as the lead male roles, Nathan Detroit (Sinatra) and Sky Masterson (Brando).
The idea of a Guys and Dolls remake has been circulating for several years. According to an article on Deadline, it looked like studio executive, Harvey Weinstein was going to get the rights. Plus, actors such as Russell Crowe, Vin Dissel, and Hugh Jackman were all expressing interest in playing the lead roles.
The original songwriter, Frank Loesser, passed away and studios were having difficulties forming a deal with his widow, Jo Loesser. She would be in charge of signing over the rights to the songs in place of her husband, but she has not found a deal she agreed with. However, 20th Century Fox must have offered the deal she was looking for because they have clenched the rights for the musical. Some of the more famous songs featured in this show are Luck Be A Lady and Sit Down, You’re Rocking The Boat.
Now that a deal has been made and a studio is starting production, hopefully there will be some official casting news to share with you soon! What do you think of Tatum and Gordon-Levitt potentially being cast in this remake? Are you a fans of Guys and Dolls? Who do you think should be cast in this remake?
