“Gangster Squad” – Release Date to be Changed

Due to the recent events at the Dark Knight Rises premiere in Aurora, Colorado, Warner Brothers is planning to change the release date of the Ruben Fleischer-directed Gangster Squad. This film was originally going to hit theaters September 7, 2012, but now the studio is looking at a 2013 release. This change is needed for the cast and crew to do reshoots because of a scene of a movie theater shooting in the completed film. A trailer for the film had a glimpse of this scene and it was pulled out of respect for the victims and because that scene will no longer be in the film.

As I have mentioned, this film has an amazing cast that includes Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Emma Stone, and finally, Sean Penn – (Really, I mean how can you go wrong?) Gangster Squad is set in 1949 Los Angeles and is a retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.

The studio is currently looking at January 11, 2013 for the new release date. However, the studio is considering when and how quickly the cast can be brought in for reshoots and their availibility for press events and premieres before officially changing the release date. The studio is also considering what other films are being released around that time and the only “competition” on the January 11 release date is is Paramount’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton.

I would like to just take a moment to say my heart goes out to the victims of the Aurora incident and I hope they all make a speedy recovery. I cannot imagine what they are all going through and I send out my best wishes to all of them.

UPDATE: The release date has officially been moved to January 11, 2013.

“The Bourne Legacy” Release Date Changed

Universal has decided to push the release date for The Bourne Legacy from August 3 to August 10. The studio came out with a statement explaining why:

“Just as The Avengers demonstrated marketplace sustainability that well outpaced traditional patterns earlier this summer, the industry expects a similar trajectory for The Dark Knight Rises. Moving one week further from its release will give The Bourne Legacy an even greater opportunity to maximize its opening box-office potential. Moving to Aug. 10 will also allow us to extend valuable promotion for the film across all NBCUniversal platforms during the Olympics, which will dominate television and digital audiences beginning July 27. We are excited about this new chapter in our Bourne franchise and confident that Aug. 10 is the right date for our film and for our industry as a whole.”

Do you think that Universal made a good choice changing the release date?
