Mothers. Daughters. Rebels. – New Character Portraits for “Suffragette”

Ladies, let’s face it, being a woman in a man’s world has never exactly been easy. However, women today would not have the same rights that we do without the generations of suffragettes who used their voices for change. This is what Focus Pictures is trying to celebrate with the upcoming historical drama, Suffragette.

Already getting early awards buzz, Suffragette stars an incomparable trio of ladies: Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter and Carey Mulligan. Plus, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw and Samuel West round out the cast.

Here are the two character posters/portraits that were released earlier this week:

Suffragette is premiering at the London Film Festival on October 7 and hitting theaters in North America on October 23. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, definitely something you do not want to miss:

Movie Exclusive – First Look at Kenneth Branagh’s “Cinderella”

Entertainment Weekly shared the first exclusive photo from the set of Disney’s live-action Cinderella film. Principal photography began on the highly awaited, Kenneth Branagh-directed film yesterday in London, England. This first photo feature Lily James as the iconic and classically beautiful princess.

According to an article on Entertainment Weekly, James is not being portrayed as your typical Cinderella and there will be some subtle changes to the story. In the classic story of Cinderella, she and the Prince (Richard Madden) first meet at the ball. In Branagh’s version, Cinderella meets the Prince before the ball, but he lies and tells her that he’s a palace employee.

In a statement yesterday, Branagh was explaining how happy he is with his cast by saying: “With Lily James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace. Her Prince is being played by Richard Madden, a young actor with incredible power and charisma. He is funny, smart and sexy and a great match for Cinderella.”

Cinderella - First Look

What do you think of this first exclusive look at the new Cinderella film? Are you looking forward to seeing more from the set as production continues? Do you think Branagh is the right director for this project? Will you be heading to theaters when Cinderella is released on March 13, 2015?

Casting News – Helena Bonham Carter to Join Disney’s “Cinderella” as Fairy Godmother

The production of Cinderella had some trouble with finding its princess at first, but Downton Abbey actress Lily James was cast as the title role back in early May. Well, the Kenneth Branagh-directed adaptation has recently found its fairy godmother in actress Helena Bonham Carter.

According to an article on The Hollywood Reporter, the fairy godmother will be getting more screen time as she will be watching over Cinderella disguised as a beggar. Then, of course, as the story goes on she will reveal her powers and who she truly is.

The film also stars Cate Blanchett as the wicked stepmother and Richard Madden of Game of Thrones as Prince Charming. The evil step-sisters will be played by another Downton Abbey star Sophie McShera and Holliday Granger of The Borgias. Simon Kinberg, Allison Shearmur and David Barron will be producing this project, which is aiming for a fall production start in London this year.

What do you think of this casting news? Do you think Bonham Carter is right for the role of the fairy godmother? What do you think of the other cast members involved in this project?

Entertainment Weekly recently announced some very exciting new for those who are fans of  Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Les Misérables. The DVD and Blu-ray version of the film will be hitting stores on March 22, 2013!

Here are some details about the bonus features that will be available on the Blu-ray and DVD:

Bonus Features Exclusive to the Blu-ray:

  • Les Misérables Singing Live The star-studded cast and production team discuss how the daunting challenge of singing live rather than lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks ultimately gave them the creative freedom to deliver nuanced, emotionally powerful performances.
  • Battle at the Barricade:  Director Tom Hooper wanted the dramatic building of the barricade to be as visceral and intense as possible, so he had his actors build it in real time, literally hurling furniture out of windows to construct an actual barricade. This featurette takes an in-depth look at the creation and filming of all the action on this remarkable set.
  • The West End Connection:  Meet the “godfather” of the original stage production of Les Misérables, renowned West End producer Cameron Mackintosh, who was deeply involved in the filming, as well as former Les Misérables, theatrical stars who were thrilled to appear in supporting roles in the current film.
  • Les Misérables on Location:  Filming rather than staging Les Misérables presents the opportunity to shoot in real world locations: a massive dry dock on the coast of England, a beautiful underground chapel in the heart of London and the ancient city of Winchester.  Members of the cast and crew talk about what it was like to find and work in these incredible locations.

Bonus Features on Both the Blu-rayand DVD:

  • The Stars of Les Misérables:  Director Tom Hooper talks about casting the iconic characters, and the actors discuss why it was important to them to be a part of this groundbreaking version of
    Les Misérables.

Seven Featurettes and a New “On My Own” Trailer released for “Les Misérables”

Since there is only one more day until Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables hits theaters, I thought that I should write a post about a few  new featurettes and a new trailer that were recently released. You can watch all of these videos exclusively on YouTube and I will share links below.

I previously posted about four other featurettes that came out earlier in December. I warned Les Misérables fans, if you do not want to spoil anything then it might be best you not watch these videos until after you see the movie. Well for this post, I will reiterate that warning, especially if you do not want to spoil anything.

The first of the featurettes includes short interviews with some of the cast, director Tom Hooper, and producer Cameron Mackintosh. In this featurette, they are all talking about Jackman and how he truly embodies the character of Jean Valjean and the amount of effort that he put into the role. The rest of the featurettes include  a look at sound mixing and editing, a look at the scale of the opening number of the film, a look at how Samantha Barks got her role,  and a look at how the soundtrack for the film was scored. Plus, there is another featurette that talks about how the Broadway actor, Colm Wilkinson, starred as Jean Valjean when the musical first opened and is now playing the bishop in the film. Finally, the last featurette has interviews with the cast and production teams as they talk about the set pieces and filming at the famous Pinewood Studios.

The trailer features Samantha Barks as Éponine as she is singing “On My Own.” There are also a few new clips intertwined with Samantha’s wonderful performance. Watch the exclusive “On My Own” Trailer here.  Plus, here are the links to all of the featurettes:

Featurette #1 – Sound Mixing/Editing

Featurette #2 – Hugh Jackman is Jean Valjean

Featurette #3 – Epic Scale – Les Mis’ Opening Number

Featurette #4 – Samantha Barks wins the role of Éponine

Four Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes for “Les Misérables”

I don’t know about you guys, but I really enjoy watching behind-the-scenes footage and learning about the different aspects that went into a film’s production. As you can imagine, I was quite happy and pleasantly surprised when I found on The Collider that there were four new behind-the-scenes featurettes released for Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables this morning!

Just a warning to Les Misérables fans, if you do not want to spoil anything then it might be best you not watch these videos. How about I just explain a little bit about what each featurette explores and you can determine if you want to watch or not from there!

As previously mentioned, there are four featurettes. The first one looks at the world of costuming and the costume designers explain some of the choices behind the costumes. The next two featurettes are about hair, make-up, and the new song that was written for the film  entitled “Suddenly.” Finally, the fourth featurette looks at set and production design. Just like in the costume featurette, the hair and make-up artists and the production designers talk a bit about their style and design choices.

Here are links to all of these amazing featurettes:

Featurette #1 – Costumes

Featurette #2 – Hair and Make-up

Featurette #3 – Original New Song

Featurette #4 – Production Design

If you decide to watch them don’t be shy to let me know what you think in the comments below and share with family and friends!
