Broadway – Orlando Bloom to star in Production of “Romeo and Juliet”

William Shakespeare’s classic play, Romeo and Juliet, will be returning to Broadway for the first time in nearly four decades. Recent casting announcements have revealed that this production has gained some talented actors and actresses.

To begin with, it was recently publicized that actor Orlando Bloom will be making his Broadway debut and playing Romeo. Bloom will be joined by Tony-Award nominees Condola Rashad as Juliet, Joe Morton as Lord Capulet, and Jayne Houdyshell as the nurse. However, the Tony-nominated director, David Leveaux, has slightly adapted this classic tale by setting it in modern times and adding the aspect of ethnicity to the story.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Leveaux states:  “Shakespeare did not only write of his world – he imagined ours. The very improbability that two young people might, through their imaginations and their courage, change the world by overcoming the cynical tyranny of division handed down to them by their elders, is the best and happily most improbable reason I can imagine to bring this story to the Broadway stage today.”

There will be previews of the show starting August 24 and opening night is on September 19 at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers theater. What do you think of the casting choices? What do you think of Leveaux choice to adapt Shakespeare’s classic play? Would you be interested in seeing this production and version of Romeo and Juliet?
