Exclusive New Still from “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug”

Even though the wait between films seems long and can be upsetting, Peter Jackson and Warner Brothers now how to keep fans happy. Entertainment Weekly recently released a new still that features actors Orlando Bloom and Evangeline Lilly as their Hobbit characters, Legolas and Tauriel.

Back when we got our first look at Lilly as her Hobbit character, she teased the potential romantic relationship between Tauriel and Legolas by saying: “She will definitely have a love story. I can’t give away too much about it. It’s not a huge focus but it is there and it is important and it does drive Tauriel and her story and her actions. Tauriel’s relationship with Legolas is significant.”

She also had this to say about the history between the two characters: “They’ve known each other since they were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thranduil, has a soft spot for Tauriel and sees something very special in her. So if you grow up side by side, and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her. That’s probably as much as I can say.”

Movie Exclusive – First Official Look at Evangeline Lilly in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”

Fans of The Hobbit series will be intrigued to know that we finally have our first look at Evangeline Lilly as her character Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug!

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly Lilly had this to say about her character:  “She’s slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn’t hesitate to kill.” Although her character was not in any of J.R.R Tolkien’s original work, Peter Jackson and his writing  team felt it was necessary to add this strong female character in this male-dominated story.

Lilly also explained a bit of her character’s backstory in the interview: “Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard. She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She doesn’t hold the same kind of status that Arwen or Galadriel or Elrond or Legolas do — she’s much more lowly. She sort of goes against the social order of the elves a little bit.”

Plus, she was teasing at a potential romantic storyline: “She will definitely have a love story. I can’t give away too much about it. It’s not a huge focus but it is there and it is important and it does drive Tauriel and her story and her actions. “Tauriel’s relationship with Legolas is significant. They’ve known each other since they were children, and Legolas’ dad, [Elven king] Thranduil, has a soft spot for Tauriel and sees something very special in her. So if you grow up side by side, and your dad has a very special spot in his heart for this young woman who’s a fantastic warrior, I think it’s hard not to notice her. That’s probably as much as I can say.”

The Hobbit - #41

And finally, for those Tolkien fans who are not so sure about adding in this new character, she had this to say:  “I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there are going to be people who will totally hate Tauriel, think that she shouldn’t be in the movie, that it’s a betrayal of Tolkien, and no matter what I do it won’t be right. There will be everything between that and people who adore her and think it’s such a fun thing to have added to the film. I kind of got prepped for that being on Lost, because we had avid fans who were really extreme in their feelings about the show and its characters. But I think if anyone knows how to respect Tolkien, it’s Peter, Fran and Phil. And Tauriel fits perfectly in that world.”

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters December 13, 2013! What do you think of this interview with Evangeline Lilly? Do you think Peter Jackson and his writing team made the right choice adding Tauriel into the story? What do you think of the possibility of a romantic storyline? Sound off in the comments!
