Foxcatcher is an upcoming dramatic thriller that has funny-man Steve Carell as the lead role. Sounds like an odd choice right? Well, according to reviews that are emerging after Monday’s Cannes Film Festival screening, Carell may just be one of this year’s Oscar contenders.
The film is based on a true story and follows Olympic Wrestling Champion Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) and his brother, Olympic Champion Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo), on their athletic journey. Sadly, their schizophrenic coach, John duPont (Carell) murdered Dave and Mark ends up fighting for justice for his brother. Watch the teaser trailer below:
Carell’s performance is not the only one gaining praise. Ruffalo and Tatum’s performances as the Schultz brothers are also gaining early critical acclaim and Oscar buzz. If the reviews on Variety, IndieWire, and The Hollywood Reporter are any indication, this is definitely not a film to miss.
Foxcatcher is directed by Bennett Miller, who has already had two films make it to the Oscars, Capote and Moneyball. According to IMDb, Miller is already nominated for the Palme d’Or Award (the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival) for Foxcatcher.
What do you think of the first trailer? Do you think this is a strong indication of what’s to come this awards season? Will you be interested in seeing Foxcatcher when it is released on November 14, 2014?

Entertainment Weekly has exclusively released our first look at director Bennett Miller’s drama, Foxcatcher. The story behind this film is based off of real life events and the relationship between millionaire John du Pont and Olympic Wrestling Champion brothers Mark (Channing Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffalo).
In real life, du Pont and the Schultz brothers developed a friendship that eventually became dangerous. Du Pont suffered from schizophrenia and was a very guarded person. In 1996, du Pont murdered Dave Schultz and was convicted for his crime in 1997.
This official image from the film gives us our first look at an unlikely actor in a title dramatic role. Steve Carrell is known best for his funny-man roles as Michael Scott in The Office and Brick Tamland in Anchorman. However, never underestimate a talented actor like Carrell as he does have experience with dramatic roles. His performance as Uncle Frank Ginsberg in the acclaimed independent film, Little Miss Sunshine is definitely memorable. For Foxcatcher, he is wearing both prosthetic pieces and age make-up, making him virtually unrecognizable.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Miller talked about why he felt it was good to cast Carrell in this dramatically demanding role:
We just had our first test [screening], and not everybody recognized Steve. He is aged [for the film], and his face is changed, and his physicality changed,” says Miller, who explains that the unlikely casting of Carell as a killer is an important part of making the character feel authentic. “If I say I’m going to make a movie about a guy who’s a schizophrenic murderer, there are probably a dozen actors who would immediately appear on anybody’s casting list. And Steve would not be on any of those lists. And that’s a good thing. Because it’s unexpected… John DuPont was a character who nobody thought was capable of doing something as horrible as he did. And I did not want to cast somebody who would feel dangerous in that way.”
Foxcatcher also stars Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave, and Anthony Michael Hall and is set to be theatrically released on December 20, 2013. Do you think the release date being closer to award season could help the film earn some award attention? What do you think of this exclusive photo? Can you believe that it is actually Steve Carrell in the photo? Would you be interested in seeing this film?
