Movie Exclusive – New Image from “Divergent” Film Adaptation

The Divergent film adaptation is still shooting in Chicago, but Entertainment Weekly has shared another exclusive photo from the set. This new photo features Shailene Woodley (as Tris Prior) surrounded by members of the Dauntless faction.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the story, the society within the Divergent world is separated into five factions: Abnegation (selfless); Erudite (intelligent); Candor (honest); Amity (peaceful) and Dauntless (brave). In order to become a member of a faction, one must go through an initiation process. Woodley’s character has chosen to become a part of the Dauntless faction and must go through a series of daring initiation tests.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Neil Burger had this to say about the photo: “In this photo she’s already jumped off the train and onto a seven story building as part of the initiation rite for the Dauntless. The next thing they have to do is jump from the building and down through a courtyard that has a deep, black hole. It’s terrifying.”

Burger also had this to say about filming this particular initiation scene: “We’d been nervously planning it because it is dangerous and there’s a lot of people on that roof. We had to pull it off safely and also pull it off cinematically, so you have this knot in your stomach as you watch this young woman decide to do this crazy thing. We had great weather that day and I think this scene really is emblematic of the movie: It shows the energy and the rawness of the way we’re telling the story,”

Divergent also stars Kate Winslet, Theo James. Maggie Q, Zoe Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Ashley Judd, and Ray Stevenson.

What do you think of this new still? What do you think of Neil Burger’s commentary on the photo and overall scene? Are you counting down the days until Divergent hits theaters March 21, 2014?
