Casting News – “Girl Meets World” Creators Reveal and Cast New Characters

The Girl Meets World news just keeps on coming as the creators are wanting production to move quickly in order to get the show “picked up” for Disney’s 2013-2014 schedule. We are now getting a chance to learn more about the show and new characters, including Cory and Topanga’s daughter, Riley Matthews.

Today it was announced that the studio cast 13-year-old Pennsylvania native Sabrina Carpenter in the role of Maya Fox. Her character is Riley’s rebellious best friend.Entertainment Weekly also shared some new information  on characters that the directors and producers of the show are looking to cast:

“– Elliott Matthews, 13. Cory and Topanga’s son. This guy will start the series as a “thinking man’s jock.” He’s described as “good looking, well built, funny and insightful in his observations. Good hearted except for his dedication toward using Riley (Blanchard) as his wrestling practice dummy. His parents worry that he has inherited the ‘Eric Matthews Algernon’ gene and will lose intelligence as time goes by.” That “Eric Matthews Algernon” bit is a two-part reference to a character in the original series who got dumber as seasons passed and the classic novel with a similar theme, Flowers for Algernon.

– Tristan Friar, 12-13. An Austin, Texas transplant who’s a “cowboy in the city.” His description: “He seems actually possessed of ethics, common sense and a value system making him immediately alien to everybody else except Riley, who believes it’s the value system that attracts her to want to be his friend even though he’s too good looking for her to look at.”

– Shamus Farkle, 12-13: This is the show’s resident genius. Future world ruler. Riley’s rebellious best friend Maya is his nemesis, Riley gets between them to save his life. Farkle is wildly attached and protective of both girls and loves equally that Riley doesn’t make him miserable and Maya does.”

Do you think these new characters sound interesting? Will you be interested in seeing how the relationships between these characters will turn out? I want to hear what you think, so sound of in the comments!

Exclusive News from “Boy Meets World” Creator Michael Jacobs

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creator of the shows Boy Meets World, revealed some very exciting news about the spin-off series Girl Meets World.

Those of you who are fans of the show now know that the Disney Channel and Jacobs have been working on the new show. Plus, you also know that Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel will be returning to the show to reprise their roles as Cory and Topanga. It was also recently announced that a young Los Angeles based actress, Rowan Blanchard, was cast as their daughter Riley Matthews.

However, there has been speculation about whether other members of the original cast will be returning and Michael Jacobs has cleared that up a bit in his interview by stating: “When Rider [Strong] said that he was not approached about being a part of the show, there actually was no official show. [At the time] it was an idea that Gary Marsh, Adam Bonnett, Corey Marsh, and the Disney Channel people called me up asking if I would be interested in doing this. It just got an official green light for pilot. I didn’t want to talk to everybody about something that was only a discussion. Then the world reacted and I got a bajillion phone calls. Rider and Will Friedle and all of the cast said, ‘What is this? We thought we were done!’ We sat down with them and talked about what their roles on the show might be. Whoever wants to be part of this show will be and whoever wants to move on will. The most important thing is to see what the show is and then see what their part in it will be. Will Friedle said, ‘I will be at every taping.’ Everybody is quite attached to it. The bottom line is: Will Rider or Will be a cast member? Will they put in appearances? Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see.”

Jacobs also talked a bit about the potential focus of the show’s storyline: “You’re going to be seeing a lot of Riley Matthews because she’s the point of view of this show, but what influences her are all of the characters in her life. You are going to see very equal attention paid to Cory and Topanga and all of the other supporting cast as you would naturally term it… Girl Meets World can be told on two levels: the coming of age of Riley Matthews and two parents who haven’t quite come of age themselves.”

Read the whole interview with Michael Jacobs here. Would you want the other original cast members to join the show (or at least been in an episode or two)? Are you excited for Girl Meets World to premiere?

Major Production Developments for the Film Adaptation of “The Fault in Our Stars”

MTV News recently interviewed producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey and got them talking about the greatly anticipated film adaptation of John Green’s book The Fault in Our Stars.

In the interview, Marty Bowen states: “If you read the screenplay you’ll get the same feeling [as in the book], I think it’s one of the best screenplays I’ve ever read.”

Plus, Godfrey and Bowen also addressed talking to acting talent about the project: “Every actress I talk to is interested, and then we’re probably going to choose the director in the next two weeks. We actually are in the process of those meetings, and I’m really excited about our choices,” says Wyck Godfrey. Plus, they touched the level of collaboration with John Green, the author. “He’s very involved. He’s read every draft. We talk to him all the time,” Marty said. “He loves the script, feels that we’ve captured everything that we could have hoped to capture in the book, so I think fans will be really happy with it.”

Finally, Godfrey also addressed a potential shooting timeline for the film: “I think we’ll be making ‘Fault in Our Stars’ by the end of the summer. It’s exciting.”

Here is the official synopsis of the novel (via GoodReads) for those of you who have not read it:

“Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs… for now.

Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.”

For those of you who are fans of the novel, does this make you excited for the film or what?! What do you think of the interview?  Who do you think would be the right director for this project? Who do you think should be cast as the two lead characters, Hazel and Augustus?

Alternating between the past and the present, she reveals the details and complexities of her relationships with family and friends, including the unlikely romance with her punk-rock boyfriend, Adam. An accomplished musician herself, Mia is torn between pursuing her love for music at Julliard and a future with Adam in Oregon. However, she must first choose between fighting to survive and giving in to the resulting sadness and despair over all she has lost.”
